How Does Your Work Space Look?
March 18, 2008
Did you know that having a cluttered and unorganized desk is a huge factor in time management?
When your desk is unorganized it is hard to find the items that you need quickly. You will end up wasting time sifting through piles of paperwork, envelopes, school notices, art projects bills..etc just to find one document you need at the moment.
By organizing your work space you will notice that you become more productive! You will be more productive and feel less tense because you will be looking at an orderly desk as opposed to a desk piled with paperwork.
Over the next few weeks I’d love to challenge you all to work to get your desk in order.
Why not carve some time out of your schedule after you are done working and start to organize your desk. I will say that to TOTALLY re-organize and declutter your work space you should start off by taking everything off of your deskand then wiping the desk down with a good cleanser. Ohh, don’t forget to peek behind the desk (you never know what may have slipped back there.
Post here and let me know if you are up to the challenge of decluttering your desk. It may take some time to complete but it will be worth it.
Let us know what you need to do, what you have questions about and be sure to let us know how your desk looks before and after the cleaning.

I’m up for the challenge, but how do you handle all the paperwork that gets placed on your desk by others in your household? Being a homeschool mom, my kids are constantly putting things on my desk. Then, my husband comes and adds to their stack. Before I know it, I’m covered over again.
Great questions Mara - This is when it comes down to educating others about the desk space.
Why not get create a “mail center” for the papers that your family has for you. You can use simple in boxes or baskets and put their name on each one. They can then place their paper into their individual basket and then you simply collect the papers when you need to.
This will keep the piles off of your desk and it will also get the family used to really respecting your space (smile). If you don’t have room for a “mail center” outside of your desk, you can then use stackable trays OR some holders that you can place upon the walls and then lable them and have the family use them. This still keeps the clutter off of your desk top but allows you to easily get what you need.
Hope that helps.
[...] you saw my post last week where I asked about your work space. This week I wanted to just give you a few pointers to help you organize your desk and keep it [...]
My other question is, what if your desk space is being taken up with equipment - monitor, printer, or phone? While I would LOVE to have a large corner desk like I had in my “before kids” job, it’s not practical in our home. We’re limited in the amount of space we have, so my desk top seems to be the only place to put my printer.
Have you tried to get the computer equipment off of the desk (except for the keyboard and monitor? What about a small hutch that will hold the printer and the CPU that you can store right next to the desk?
if you can post a picture of your desk as it is now, I bet I could help you out a bit more :)
